Buzz Aldrin says Australia's NBN the next frontier in communication

NASA Astronaut Buzz Aldrin has given a ringing endorsement to Australia's plan to connect the whole country with high speed broadband after a recent visit to Australia.

Buzz was responding to news this week that NBN Co is planning to build a new broadband satellite ground station in Carnarvon, WA, close to a site that was used as a transmission facility in the Apollo missions to the moon.

"I was told this was on the cards when I visited Carnarvon in July to open the town's Space and Technology Museum," said Dr Aldrin, who piloted the first manned lunar landing on the moon, and was the second man on the moon.

"I think it's just wonderful that Carnarvon will soon be reviving its historic links with space with the launch of a National Broadband Network satellite base station.

"The revitalisation of a site that played such a central role in NASA's Apollo missions will prepare people in the Australian outback for the next frontier in communications via the National Broadband Network."

Western Australia is also planned to host two other ground stations, in Geraldton and Kalgoorlie. Together, the three ground stations will transmit a high speed broadband connection to NBN Co's two high performance satellites which are currently under construction.

The satellites, in turn, are designed to beam the NBN connection back to homes, farms and businesses in remote areas. The service is expected to be up and running by the end of 2015.
