The Cisco Visual Networking Index report on the global mobile data traffic forecast (2011–2016) highlights the increase in data usage from mobile devices including mobile phones, tablets and gaming consoles. By the end of 2012, it is expected that the number of mobile connected devices will exceed the number of people on earth, and global mobile data traffic will increase 18 fold between 2011 and 2016.

March 2012 - Oolyala’s Videomind Video Index (Q3 2011) report
Oolyala’s Videomind Video Index (Q3 2011) report analyses the fundamental shift in how people everywhere watch TV, film and video content across multiple devices. The amount of video played on connected TVs and gaming consoles tripled in Q3. Although tablets continue to dominate viewer engagement, with a 30% average more viewing time per play compared to videos watched on desktops.

January 2012 – Data Usage Impact Between Different Internet Activities
Australians use the internet for a variety of activities from downloading music to checking emails. You would expect that these different internet activities would have a different impact on data usage - but by how much? This research shows that watching 1 hour of streaming video consumes up to 5 times more data over a 1 hour period when compared to normal browsing over the same period.

December 2011 - Sandvine Fall 2011 Report
Sandvine’s Fall 2011 report highlighted the increasing impact of “on-demand” Real-Time Entertainment applications form streaming videos and music, on overall usage patterns as well as the growing impact of mobile marketplaces and new Internet connected devices. The lack of comparable IPTV products and services in the local market has meant that Australia is yet to experience the full data impact from this segment; however it is clear that this is only a matter of time.

November 2011 - ABS Data Usages Reports
The latest ABS Internet Activity results highlight a substantial increase in data usage.
Mobile broadband subscribers increased +13.3% (an additional 566,000 subscribers) compared to fixed broadband subscribers of +0.6% (an additional 32,000 subscribers) over the last 6 months. Fixed broadband accounted for 93% of the total monthly data downloads with the average monthly usage increasing by 45.1% per user over the 6 month period whilst the average monthly usage of wireless declined by 0.8% per user in the same period, as at June 11.
This highlights that the mobile network continues to provide us with access to the information we need whilst on the move, while the fixed network is being used at home or via Wi-Fi Hotspots to provide us with access to our larger data files, such as video.
