Lift emergency phones

The nbn® network has replaced most existing fixed phone and internet networks. When you switch over to the nbn network, it may affect the operation of important services, such as your lift emergency phones.



Important Notice

With the nbn network being fully built and operational** and the completion of mass disconnection from the legacy copper network, nbn closed the Fire and Lift register on Friday 25th February 2022. nbn will continue to provide migration assistance for services registered prior to this date, until they are migrated or disconnected from the legacy copper network.

If an emergency lift phone or monitored alarm panel that you are managing is currently connected to the legacy copper network, you will need to organise the migration of the existing equipment to an alternative technology.

Please contact your equipment provider and phone and internet provider to initiate the migration or for further information.

What you need to do


  1. Talk to your lift maintenance provider about your options for migrating your emergency lift phone to the nbn network or an alternative technology prior to the disconnection of your current service.
  2. Once you have asked your lift maintenance provider for advice about options to migrate your lift emergency phone, you will need to decide which option to install. Remember that it is your responsibility to transition your lift phone service off the legacy network.
  3. Once the lift emergency phone has been migrated, ask your lift maintenance provider to test it and confirm it is working properly .

  • Will my lift emergency phone work properly when connected to the nbn network?
  • If so, what specific phone or internet service will work best with my lift emergency phone?
  • Will my lift emergency phone be able to dial out during a power outage when connected to the nbn network?
  • If not, what alternatives are available?
  • What solutions would you [the provider] suggest? Are there any costs involved?



Frequently Asked Questions


If your equipment is still connected to the legacy copper network, you will need to arrange its transition to the nbn network or another alternative technology as soon as possible. You should speak with your equipment provider to discuss options or if an available solution will be compatible on the nbn network.

Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that your equipment is transitioned from the legacy copper network.

The Fire and Lift Register is not an ongoing service. The assistance provided is limited to the migration of fire and lift services from the legacy copper network onto any alternative technology. Registrations are closed once migration or disconnection has occurred and/or the registered equipment is no longer in use.
Once your equipment has been transitioned from the legacy copper network, simply ask your lift maintenance provider to test it and confirm it is working properly.

** NBN Co’s build completion commitment was that all standard installation premises in Australia are able to connect to the nbn™ access network as at 30 June 2020. This excludes premises in future new developments which will be an ongoing activity for the Company beyond the build completion date. It also excludes a small proportion of premises defined as ‘complex connections’ – which includes properties that are difficult to access, culturally significant areas and heritage sites – where connection depends on factors outside NBN Co’s control such as permission from traditional owners, and where network construction to allow such premises to connect will be an ongoing activity of NBN Co beyond 30 June 2020.
