Things you need to know

Contact your preferred Fixed Wireless provider

Up to five Fixed Wireless plans are available from a range of phone and internet providers. Your provider can advise on the best plan to suit your needs, whether you’ll need any new devices and help book an installation appointment with an nbn approved technician.

Our new higher speed plans are becoming progressively available to eligible premises through a growing number of participating providers from July 2024 onwards.

Installation process

The first step is to place an order for an nbn Fixed Wireless plan with the phone and internet provider of your choice. The provider will make an appointment for an nbn approved technician to attend the premises and test for a Fixed Wireless signal. Once the signal is acquired, the nbn approved technician may put the nbn outdoor antenna on the roof of the main premises, under the eaves or on a wall. The nbn outdoor antenna can also be put on powered buildings (like a shed, garage or Solar Mount Structure) close to the main premises, with the nbn connection box inside an enclosed area.

If sufficient signal strength cannot be reached at the premises it will not be able to be connected to nbn Fixed Wireless.

If you’re currently connected to an nbn Satellite service, there may be additional steps for you to follow.

Frequently asked questions

We're optimising the Fixed Wireless network, including installing the next generation 4G and 5G equipment. This new technology is designed to deliver more reach (by extending the range of the towers from 14km to up to 29kms where possible) and more speed to regional and remote Australia. nbn is among the first in the world to deploy the 5G technology at this scale for a dedicated Fixed Wireless network.

We’re evolving the network by also working with local governments and councils to install new Fixed Wireless towers in selected areas.

As part of the nbn Fixed Wireless network upgrades, up to 120,000 premises previously on the nbn Satellite network will have the opportunity to access nbn Fixed Wireless for the first time.

nbn has selected satellite premises based on their proximity and the predicted strength of the wireless signal to connect to the Fixed Wireless towers at the location. At the time of connection, an nbn approved technician will attend the premises to ensure the signal strength is strong. If sufficient signal strength cannot be reached at the premises it will not be able to be connected to Fixed Wireless.

Check your address to find out if your premises is now within the Fixed Wireless coverage area.

Please note, nbn Fixed Wireless upgrade works are ongoing, so we recommend checking your address every few months to see what's available at your premises.

If you’re currently connected to a Fixed Wireless plan, you’ll generally be able to continue using your service as usual during the upgrade works.

However, you may experience a reduction in service and outages as we roll out the upgrades in your area over several weeks. We’ll notify your provider of any outages ahead of time, so they can keep you informed.

Our new higher speed plans are becoming progressively available to eligible premises through a growing number of participating providers from July 2024 onwards.

nbn Fixed Wireless Home Fast offers peak wholesale download speeds between 200-250 and upload speeds between 8-20 MbpsΔ*. We anticipate by the end of the upgrade program this plan will be available to approximately 90% of the upgraded nbn Fixed Wireless coverage area.*

nbn Fixed Wireless Superfast offers peak wholesale download speeds of 400Mbps and upload speeds between 10-40 MbpsΔ*. We anticipate by the end of the upgrade program this plan will be available to approximately 80% of the upgraded nbn Fixed Wireless coverage area.

Plus, we’ve boosted speeds on our most popular plan; Fixed Wireless Plus. Wholesale speed capability has now been lifted from up to 75/10Mbps to up to 100/20Mbps. This plan is available across 100% of the nbn Fixed Wireless coverage area.

Important notes

#

Faster download speeds mean less buffering where the buffering was caused by slow download speeds over the nbn Fixed Wireless network. Please note that the amount of buffering you experience may also be affected by other factors outside of nbn’s control (like your Wi-Fi and other equipment configuration, chosen broadband plan, how your provider designs its network, or the video streaming and other content providers’ network).

*

Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn network, depends on the nbn network technology and configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside our control (like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans, signal reception and how your service provider designs its network). Speeds may be impacted by the number of concurrent users on nbn’s Fixed Wireless network, including during busy periods.

+

If the nbn technician determines after testing that your premises does not have sufficient signal strength, then the necessary equipment will not be installed, and you will not be able to access the nbn Fixed Wireless network.

Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises and placing an order for an nbn powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.

^

Not all providers offer plans based on the full range of wholesale speed tiers. Talk to your preferred provider for more information about availability and the right retail solution for your needs.

Δ

These are nbn wholesale speed tiers which nbn provides to retail phone and internet providers.  Attainable wholesale speeds are subject to the rollout of network upgrades and some premises will require nbn to complete upgrades to the equipment at the premises.
