Construction of Stage 1 of the Tasmania rollout begins
Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point were announced as the first towns selected for Tasmania Stage 1 rollout. The Tasmanian rollout will extend to approximately 200,000 premises, using a mix of optical fibre and the remainder of premises being served by currently leading edge fixed wireless or satellite technologies.

NBN Co announces first release sites
NBN Co Limited announced the rolling out of broadband fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) network to five first release sites on mainland Australia. The first release sites represent the diversity of situations NBN Co will encounter across Australia in the network volume rollout, so the sites have been selected that allow us to test different construction techniques.

NBN Co reached a Financial Heads of Agreement with Telstra that will provide access to Telstra facilities and the progressive migration of Telstra traffic onto the National Broadband Network, subject to regulatory approval.

National Broadband Network goes live on mainland Australia
The city of Armidale in rural New South Wales became the first centre in mainland Australia to receive the National Broadband Network. The Prime Minister presided over the switch-on of fibre optic broadband services to selected Armidale residents at an official ceremony.

NBN Co signed binding agreements with Telsra and Optus to migrate their subscribers to the National Broadband Network (NBN). These agreements are intended to enable a more efficient rollout of the National Broadband Network for all Australians.

NBN Co launched Interim Satellite Service for remote Australians
NBN Co introduced a satellite service for premises across mainland Australia and Tasmania that previously had limited access to broadband. NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service became available to eligible individuals, small businesses and Indigenous communities from July 2011, who can order their broadband services from a participating retail service provider.

Kiama Downs and Minnamurra join NBN
Residents in the neighbouring areas of Kiama Downs and Minnamurra, south of Sydney, became the next to experience fibre broadband through the National Broadband Network as the first mainland coastal sites went live on 29 July 2011. The fibre network in Kiama Downs/Minnamurra covers approximately 2,350 premises, with residents in 80 per cent of properties having consented to the installation of optic fibre at their premises during construction to make them "NBN ready".

First communities for National Broadband Network fixed wireless service unveiled
NBN Co announced that communities in five states and territories are set to become the first in the country to receive NBN Co’s high-speed fixed wireless service. The first to receive the service will be homes, businesses and institutions in the less densely populated rural and regional communities that surround Geraldton (WA), Toowoomba (Qld), Tamworth (NSW), Ballarat (Vic) and Darwin (NT).

National Broadband Network goes live in Brunswick, VIC
The National Broadband Network came to Melbourne with the inner city suburb of Brunswick becoming the first metropolitan area in Australia to receive fibre-based broadband. The Prime Minister the Hon Julia Gillard MP switched on the network at a ceremony at the Brunswick Town Hall.

Queensland connected to the National Broadband Network
Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan MP, officially switched on the first fibre-based community in Queensland, at a ceremony at The Cathedral School in the Townsville suburb of Mundingburra. The Townsville rollout of the fibre optic broadband service covers an area encompassing 3,100 premises in the city’s western suburbs, of which 1950 (or 63%) consented to the connection of a line during construction to make their premises “NBN ready”.

First new broad-acre development connected to the NBN
Out on site in Western Sydney Senator Stephen Conroy and NBN Co Chief Executive, Mike Quigley, toured the estate and tested live services and applications like IPTV, video conferencing, gaming consoles and IP phones available in the display homes at Bunya, a Landcom Development**. NBN Co Chief Executive Mike Quigley said, “More than1.9 million new premises are estimated to be constructed across Australia during the life of the NBN rollout. NBN Co has already received more than 2,200 new development applications for fibre infrastructure nationally."

National Broadband Network goes live in Willunga
Ms Janelle Reimann, Principal of Willunga High School, the first public school on the mainland to be connected to the NBN, said the high-definition video lessons her students can now receive via the NBN, as part of the trial, offers them a much improved educational experience. "The high-definition videoconferencing our senior students can now have with viticulture experts has been made possible via the NBN. Students doing VET Certificate 1 Food Processing (Wine) can now interact with experts, like those from SA TAFE’s Regional Mount Barker Campus today, as if they were in the same room.

NBN Co releases 12 month national rollout plan
Work has begun on the rollout of the National Broadband Network in areas that are expected to cover more than half a million homes and businesses across Australia when complete. NBN Co released its inaugural 12-month construction outlook. The schedule lists the communities in each state and territory where work will begin between now and September 2012, as well as where work on the rollout of the network is currently underway.

NBN Co unveils key operations and demonstration facilities
On the 25th November 2011, NBN Co unveiled two hands-on interactive resources - an experience centre at Docklands and a mobile demonstration vehicle. These enable Australians to see for themselves how the NBN will work, what it involves and how communities stand to benefit as high speed broadband is delivered to every home and business.
