Although most existing services will be replaced by the nbn network, there are some services that should not be impacted. These include those services provided over non-nbn fibre networks, some services in some apartment complexes, and some business and Special Services. nbn strongly recommends you contact your current phone and internet provider as soon as possible to find out if your services are impacted. You can also find out more at www.nbn.com.au/switchoff

Frequently asked questions

The purple shading indicates an area where most premises should be able to connect to services over the nbn network, however some premises may have additional work that needs to be completed first. There are also some premises in Australia that cannot connect to the nbn network. Check your address above to find out if the nbn network is available at your home or business.

Generally, single-dwelling units (e.g. houses) are more straightforward to connect than multi-dwelling units (e.g. apartments/units). This is because multi-dwelling units require additional work such as liaising with a body corporate, owners’ corporation or strata management, and sometimes extensive cabling.

This could be due to many reasons. These might include the complexity of the area, necessary changes in access technology, the capacity of our delivery partners or the condition of the existing infrastructure.

It’s also possible that we may have identified additional work that needs to be completed in the area before we can successfully provide access to services over the nbn™ network. Please check back periodically to see if your connection date has been amended.

If your home is a pre-existing premises and the nbn network build is still underway, your address will automatically update to appear in the map when the area goes live. If your area already has the ability to connect to services over the nbn network and you still can’t see your premises on the rollout map, please contact your preferred phone and internet provider so they can lodge a missing address request with us.

If your home is a newly-built premises, we recommend checking with your builder or developer to ensure a new development application has been lodged.

We have planned and designed the nbn network based on best-fit logic across Australia, which has allowed us to match the ideal technology type to each area. There are however many reasons why your premises might be receiving one particular nbn network technology type over another. This could range from a combination of factors such as your location, the condition of the existing infrastructure in your area and/or the time it takes to get you connected.

Just as we plan and design the nbn network based on a best-fit logic across Australia, we also do so at premises level.

There are instances where a different technology is later determined to be a better fit than what might have originally been planned.

Depending on the type of new development, the developer/builder may have been able to specifically apply for an FTTP connection. These requests are appraised on a case-by-case basis.

Existing premises in any area will always be serviced by the technology type determined to be the best-fit for that area.

We always try to install external equipment to as many premises as possible during the construction phase. If your premises has been missed, there’s no need for concern. Any required nbn equipment will be installed after you order a service with your preferred phone and internet provider.

External equipment is not required to order a service over the nbn network. As long as your premises is ready to connect, you can order a service. If the equipment isn’t present when ordering a service, we’ll simply install it after you’ve placed an order with your preferred phone and internet provider.

You can only order a service once your premises has been deemed ready to connect to the nbn network. External nbn equipment may be installed at your premises but further work may still need to be done. We’ll let you know by mail once your premises is ready to connect.

As part of this process we are able to provide you with an indication of when our delivery partners intend to visit. Thankfully, you don’t have to be home for our technicians to install the exterior equipment.

If you would prefer to be present when the work commences you can request to have the work deferred by calling us on 1800 687 626. A deferral means that instead of nbn completing the work as part of the build works, you’ll have to wait until your premises is deemed ready to connect for the equipment to be installed. Once your premises is ready to connect, you can then contact your phone and internet provider to order services and arrange an appointment for a registered nbn technician to install the relevant external and internal equipment as part of the same connection appointment.
