'Telehealth transformed our life, and saved us money too'

How the nbn™ network opened up a world of convenience with access to telehealth services for the Morse family.

The Morses

Living with medical conditions has historically been a drain on both money and time.

The need to regularly check-in with specialists has meant people living outside city centres often have to travel great distances in order to see their doctor.

The rollout of fast broadband has revolutionised access to healthcare for many Australians. Telehealth enables us to use technology to remotely access healthcare services in many different ways.

Now many Aussies can potentially video-conference their doctor in real-time for a check-up; have their condition tracked and monitored via home sensors; and there’s a plethora of clever apps to help keep our health in tip-top shape.

For the Morse family in particular, fast broadband transformed the way they accessed healthcare.*

The arrival of the nbn™ network in Somerset meant big things for Paul Morse, both for his family life and work life.

The biggest impact of all was on caring for his daughter, who has a medical condition.

Her condition required regular consultations with a Melbourne-based specialist. Before the rollout of the nbn™ network, this meant regular visits to Melbourne and accumulating flight and accommodation costs.

“We had to fly back and forth to check-in regularly with our specialist. The ADSL internet connection we used to have was slow and unreliable when using Skype and would frequently drop out,” says Paul.

The nbn™ network has now opened a world of opportunity for the Morse family to access health services online and save hundreds of dollars in flights and accommodation bills.*

“We’re now able to consult with her doctor via Skype and we’re saving hundreds of dollars in travel costs, not to mention disruption to our daughter’s routine. The doctor says the connection is crystal clear. It’s made things so much easier.”

Paul is also able to work from home with national energy company Viva.

“My work life has improved too as my job covers Tasmania and Victoria, now I’m able to work across both from my desk at home.”

He can video-conference with colleagues and clients and there are no more issues with constant dropouts or slow speeds since the changeover.

“It has great work and personal benefits for us and we are saving money as well," he says.

*Your experience including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network depends on the technology over which services are delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans and how your service provider designs its network.

Access to your work network will depend on factors outside our control like your organisation’s IT policy and infrastructure.
