NBN Co Ultrafast speed rollout hits a major milestone

04 November 2024

  • More than nine million homes and businesses are now able to access nbn® Ultrafast speeds, a crucial step towards fulfilling the Company's 2025 commitments.
  • Homes and businesses with gigabit capability can take advantage, via participating retailers, of enhanced wholesale download and upload speeds from September 2025.
  • Details of 145,000 homes and businesses, that will progressively become eligible1,2 for nbn full fibre upgrades between now and the end of 2025, have been released.

NBN Co has reached a significant milestone, with more than nine million homes and businesses across the nbn® network now able to access nbn® Ultrafast speeds via nbn’s full fibre and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) network technologies.

This achievement is a crucial step towards fulfilling the Company’s 2025 commitments, which include enabling more than 10 million premises, or up to 90 per cent of homes and businesses across the Fixed Line network, to access nbn® Home Ultrafast, offering wholesale download speeds of close to one gigabit per second (Gbps)3.

These ‘gig capable’ premises will also benefit from the Company’s recent initiative to enhance its fastest three residential wholesale products. Customers opting for an eligible high-speed tier will transition to faster speed plans automatically when they are rolled out by participating retailers from September 2025.

More fibre upgrade premises released

A key component in achieving the Company’s 2025 targets is the implementation of its fibre upgrade program, enabling eligible households and businesses to switch from copper-based services to full-fibre nbn connections.

Today, the Company released the details of 145,000 homes and businesses that will be eligible for nbn full fibre upgrade between now and the end of 2025. This includes homes and businesses located in parts of more than 389 suburbs and towns across Australia. These suburbs and towns are ones where full fibre upgrades haven’t previously been available.

This latest release sees the total number of homes and businesses that will be eligible for full fibre upgrades by December 2025 increase to more than five million.

Those eligible for a full fibre upgrade can request one from their internet service provider by ordering an eligible plan. The upgrade will involve extending a fibre optic cable from the street to the premises, replacing the existing copper.

The demand for these upgrades is also at an all-time high with more than 500,000 homes and businesses across the country already ordering a full fibre upgrade.

Anna Perrin, Chief Customer Officer at NBN Co, said:

“This achievement marks a major milestone for nbn and Australia, showcasing the considerable strides we've made to lift the digital capability of Australia.

“Reaching nine million premises with gigabit wholesale download speed capabilities allows more people to benefit from faster nbn network internet services. These faster nbn network speeds enable smoother, high-resolution video calls, better streaming, quicker downloads, faster gaming response times, and the ability to connect more devices at once, such as smart TVs, home security systems, and other smart home technology.4

“A decade ago, the average Australian home had seven internet-connected devices and consumed around 40 gigabytes per month. Today, the average household consumes 443 gigabytes per month across 22 internet-connected devices. We predict that average will grow to 33 connected devices by 2026 and 40 by the end of the decade.

“As we continue to improve our network capabilities, we are not only meeting the data demand of today, but also empowering Australians to thrive into the future."

Footnotes

1 Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs may apply, please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria may include among other things placing an order for an nbn powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Not all providers offer plans based on the full range of wholesale speed tiers.

2 NBN Co provides wholesale services to phone and internet providers. nbn® wholesale speed tiers available to providers vary depending on the access technology in an end user’s area.

3 Regardless of the retail service an end customer purchases, the actual wholesale speeds delivered by NBN Co’s highest residential wholesale speed tier will be less than 1 Gbps due to equipment and network limitations and the peak information rate may fall anywhere in this range. References to speeds are not end customer speeds; they are wholesale layer 2 peak information rate bandwidth provided to retail providers. An end customer’s experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn® network, depends on some factors outside NBN Co’s control (like equipment quality, software, and how a retail service provider designs its network) and the NBN Co technology used for the connection.

4 Customer experience on nbn full fibre, including speed, depends on your internet provider, plan, equipment quality and if you use the internet at peak times.
