Technical onboarding

Step 3 of 6

What is technically required to onboard to the nbn® network

The first question on businesses' technical journey should be related to their strategy to connect to nbn’s Points of Interconnect (POI). For clarification on why POI connections are important, please refer to What is a POI? How and where your provider connects to the nbn network.

To help form the POI strategy, consider the following:

  • How many of the 121 POIs does your business plan on connecting to?

Tips

It is important that you explore the various connection options and determine what works best for your organisation.

If onboarding for business nbn® Satellite Service, you will be required to connect to the Eastern Creek or Wangara POI using a direct fibre backhaul for access bandwidth service (ABS) products.

Is your business planning on connecting directly to these POIs? If so:

  • Who will be providing the backhaul for these POIs?
  • Does your business know how long it will take for this backhaul to be delivered?
  • Is your business aware that backhaul is a separate cost not associated with nbn?

Is your business planning on connecting to these POIs by Network to Network Interface (NNI) Link? If so:

  • Does your business have commercial agreements in place with these providers?
  • Does your business know what limitations (e.g. bandwidth) may be applicable by going this route?
  • Is your business aware that not all NNI Link providers connect to all 121 POIs?

Tips

In addition to the physical connection requirements, your business should consider the amount and kind of technical staff available to support onboarding and day to day operations associated with doing business with nbn. Typically, this would include (but isn't limited to):

  • Network architects familiar with configuration who can facilitate inter-operational network capability testing with nbn;
  • Network engineers who are familiar with provisioning and assuring a service from your organisation’s network, through nbn’s network, and on to your end user;
  • Technical sales specialists who can understand the cost of delivering a service and potential ROI per service.

Once the WBA has been completed, the Technical Onboarding Team will work with your organisation to provide guidance around modelling your products onto the nbn solution set.

During this phase of technical onboarding, nbn will:

  • Provide your business with more detailed information to help refine your business’ POI connection strategy;
  • Set up discussions with your business to help model your products onto the nbn solution set. This will include solution definition discussions that clearly articulate the product attributes available to your business from the nbn product catalogue. This step makes it easier for your business to fully understand your interactions with nbn and help streamline the product development and integration steps that you'll need to undertake;
  • Assist your business with generating an accreditation plan based on the product attributes you'll be ordering from the nbn product catalogue. This plan will determine the type of nbn Access Services that your business can order after completing Interoperability Certification Testing and Operational Accreditation Testing.

During this phase of technical onboarding, your business will:

  • Complete the Solution Brief document containing high-level information of your business’ network architecture - and how your network equipment integrates and works with the nbn network and solution set;
  • Conduct Pre-Certification Testing and providing a completed Pre-Certification Testing report to nbn;
  • Conduct Interoperability Certification Testing at nbn’s National Test Facility to show that you can correctly interface with the nbn network.

In order to view the operational onboarding page, please acknowledge you have considered how your network will interface with nbn and the associated costs and timing.
