Key things that you need to know
Your existing copper services
Because nbn fibre services will become available, the existing copper network will be disconnected by Telstra. This may affect your landline phone and internet service, if it is based on copper connection and you do not migrate these to an nbn FTTP service. Your phone and internet provider will endeavour to notify you when your copper connection is due for disconnection and support the transition across to the FTTP network or source an alternative option (such as mobile data).
If you are an existing nbn customer and you want to stay connected to the nbn network, then you will eventually be required to transition any services connected via the copper network to FTTP, as the nbn FTTP network will be replacing the existing copper network, nbn Fixed Wireless or Satellite network in your area.
More information and assistance
Installation and equipment
Our nbn approved construction partner will write to you if you are directly impacted by the installation works. It has our nbn approved construction partner’s contact details if you have further questions.
If your location is being upgraded, we’ll send you a notification in the mail to confirm your new nbn technology and the times when our construction partner will be in the area to build the new infrastructure. You’ll also receive some dates for you to confirm your availability for you to be there when we install the new nbn equipment. Keep in mind, installing the equipment early may help with a quicker connection with your provider when you go to order an nbn powered plan.
You can ask to see the nbn approved construction partner’s identification to confirm they are working on behalf of nbn.
All official nbn material will always feature the nbn logo and our nbn approved technicians and workers will have an enAble™ digital identification cards. The enAble™ digital identification cards feature a QR code that you can scan to confirm its validity.
We encourage you to always request to see this card before providing physical access to your premises.
If you are connecting to FTTP for the first time, then you’ll need new nbn equipment on the outside and inside your home.
The nbn equipment that will be installed both inside and outside your premises includes:
- The utility box (also known the Premises Connection Device or PCD) on the outside of the premises
- The connection box (also known as the Network Termination Device or NTD) on the inside or outside of premises
- Power Supply Unit inside the premises
Yes, you, or an authorised person over the age of 18, will need to be present for this appointment as the nbn technician or construction partner will need to come onto your property and may even need to access your premises.
You can also speak to the nbn technician or construction partner about where internal nbn equipment will be installed inside your premises. Your assigned technician will try to accommodate your first choice of location where possible, however they will need to install the connection box based on the list of specifications.
Note for renters - make sure that you have the landlord or property manager’s verbal or written permission before the visit as the installation can include drilling into the property walls.
Your chosen phone and internet provider can give you information about what devices you need for the new technology connection.
When it comes to compatible modems, most nbn equipment will work with different technologies. Your provider can help you to check the compatibility of your existing modem with your new nbn technology, troubleshoot any issues and identify any new connection devices you may need.
nbn recommends you contact your preferred phone and internet provider, and your current device provider about whether your services, and/or the compatibility of your devices will be impacted.
When you are comfortable that everything is working to your satisfaction, you can also contact us to organise to have your original nbn equipment removed. We ask that you wait until your new service is active so that you reduce any risks of down time or limited connectivity during the change over.
Upgrading to an FTTP connection
No, not long term. If you want to stay connected to the nbn network, then eventually you will have to transition to the new technology (FTTP) from your original technology (Fixed Wireless or Satellite), but you will need to contact your preferred phone and internet provider and ask to connect to an nbn powered plan on FTTP.
Ask your existing provider if you can move to a new nbn powered plan now, or whether you’ll need to complete the full term on your existing contract first.
It is your decision. This may be influenced by the circumstances of your current contract (e.g. exit fees).
For Fixed Wireless
We’re upgrading the nbn Fixed Wireless network so more homes and businesses in regional and remote Australia can have access to even better broadband. Fixed Wireless will be more widely available to eligible homes and businesses, with more premises to become eligible in the future.
For nbn® Sky Muster®
Demand for data is changing for our satellite customers and we’re evolving the network to help meet these needs now and into the future. We’ve recently introduced a new uncapped data usage plan option on nbn Sky Muster Plus which is available from providers. Fair use and shaping to slower speeds apply.

Regardless of the retail service you purchase, the actual wholesale download speeds delivered to providers will be less than 1Gbps due to equipment and network limitations. Your experience on FTTP, including the speeds actually achieved, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan, or how your provider designs its network).
Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises and placing an order for an nbn powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.
