More nbn® fibre for more homes across regional Australia

More regional and remote areas will have access to our fastest, most reliable home connection

We’re working with Local, State and Federal Governments to upgrade select communities that are currently in Fixed Wireless or Satellite areas to full fibre via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). FTTP is nbn’s fastest and most reliable residential connection. With an nbn full fibre connection, you could access speeds close to 1Gbps.*

If your home or business is eligible to be upgraded, you will be contacted by one of our construction partners by mail when construction starts. If you have been notified that your area is being upgraded, then please check the below.

Key things that you need to know

Our construction partners may visit your home during build works

You’ll likely see our construction partners as they go about their work laying cables in areas that are being upgraded. They may even visit the outside of your property to inspect what works are required to upgrade your location.

They will not need to enter your property for this inspection, so you don’t need to be home for this visit.

Additional work may be required to install new nbn equipment at your location

Our construction partners may ask if you’d like to organise a time to install nbn equipment for your nbn FTTP connection while they’re in the area. Installing the equipment early may help with a quicker connection when the network build has been completed and you contact your preferred provider to order an nbn powered plan.

If the time doesn’t suit you, then you can book an installation appointment later when you place an order with your provider.

Getting connected to FTTP

Once the build works are finished, you will be able to order a new nbn powered plan on FTTP with your preferred provider. We’ll let you know by mail and your provider may be in touch to let you know you’re ready to connect to FTTP.

Once you connect to FTTP, we recommend checking with your original provider that your plan on the original nbn technology (Fixed Wireless or Satellite) has been cancelled, so that you can avoid being charged for services you no longer require.

Your existing copper services

Because nbn fibre services will become available, the existing copper network will be disconnected by Telstra. This may affect your landline phone and internet service, if it is based on copper connection and you do not migrate these to an nbn FTTP service. Your phone and internet provider will endeavour to notify you when your copper connection is due for disconnection and support the transition across to the FTTP network or source an alternative option (such as mobile data).

If you are an existing nbn customer and you want to stay connected to the nbn network, then you will eventually be required to transition any services connected via the copper network to FTTP, as the nbn FTTP network will be replacing the existing copper network, nbn Fixed Wireless or Satellite network in your area.

Regardless of the retail service you purchase, the actual wholesale download speeds delivered to providers will be less than 1Gbps due to equipment and network limitations. Your experience on FTTP, including the speeds actually achieved, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan, or how your provider designs its network).

Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises and placing an order for an nbn powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.
