Turn data sprawl and spread into a business advantage

Data demands on business are growing. To move, manage and utilise data as an asset – nbn business-grade network features provide a critical digital foundation.

Throughout the last two years, businesses across Australia have ramped up their use of new technology by utilising applications such as cloud back-up and storage, and adopting VPN services for remote working. This trend has seen their data volume continue to grow, as businesses store and access data in more locations than ever before. This has been leading to an increased demand on business networks, as new applications that create more data cause ‘data sprawl’. The variety and volume of the data being generated by this ‘sprawl’ means data plans need flexibility and scalability to evolve alongside business needs.

There’s also the rapid adoption and impact of cloud-based systems to consider. The Telsyte Australian Digital Workplace Study2 commissioned by nbn in 2021, shows 66 per cent of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are already using some type of cloud-based service.

But the adoption of IT solutions such as cloud and business intelligence platforms are also contributing to ‘data spread’, meaning business data is stored in (and accessed from) many locations. These include internal data centres, private and public clouds, remote users and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

To deal with data ‘sprawl’ and data ‘spread’, network infrastructure needs to move data quickly and reliably between cloud-based services, apps, employees, storage and disaster recovery systems, suppliers and customers – among other potential sources and destinations. Importantly, this must all be done securely.
